    I also gave a midterm this semester and it served a couple of purposes in addition to those you listed. As I was a first time teacher, it gave me a practice run at determining how I grade. Explaining my process to the students helped them prepare for my final because they got a better sense of what’s important to me and how I determine scores. I also noticed that the students who didn’t do very well on the midterm did great on the final–getting a lower grade than they’re used to seemed to motivate them to study hard for the exam and/or better understand my expectations (which is related to your point #1). Lastly, I thought having a take-home with fewer time constraints that resembled transactional work in the subject was a good counterpoint to an issue-spotter final that looks more like what litigators do.
