Upon Reflection . . .
I think the most important part of the Second Inaugural was the President’s elevation of the Stonewall Riots to the plane of Selma and Seneca Falls as a landmark event in American civil rights. That will probably canonize that moment for future generations, though that process will take time.
In the short run, one wonders if the President’s strong statement in support of same-sex marriage–made in front of so many Justices–will have any impact on their thinking if the Court reaches the merits in the cases now pending.
