Sharing and Reaching Out

Posted By Lawrence Cunningham On January 2, 2013 @ 12:17 pm In Uncategorized | 4 Comments

In the hunt for elegant communications-speak in our email era, once upon a time it was nice to hear that someone wanted to share something with me and that a colleague from whom I had not heard in a long time wanted to reach out to me.  Overuse, however, now bedevils these nice touches.  Here is an example adapted from recent exchanges:

Assistant to Me: I wanted to share with you that the publisher has shared with me its desire to share with media contacts some advance copies of the manuscript.

Me: Thanks.  Please tell them that’s fine.

Assistant: Great.  I will reach out to the publisher and ask them to reach out to the media contacts.

Perhaps you will want to join Greg Gutfeld in his “banned phrases.”

You should touch base instead, or perhaps ping them.

It used to be that “sharing desire” meant something else, too.

Is this a social media variation of the Ponzi scheme/chain letter?
