The Six Stages of Scandal (The General Petreus Edition)

Stage 1:  That’s ridiculous.  It can’t possibly be true.

Stage 2:  It’s not true.

Stage 3:  You can’t prove it’s true.

Stage 4:  Why are you trying to prove it’s true?

Stage 5:  It’s disgusting that you proved it’s true.

Stage 6:  What’s the big deal anyway?

UPDATE:  Hat Tip to Mickey Kaus, who first came up with this list.

What is “it” and whose thinking proceeded even slightly along these lines?

(From the citation of Mickey Kaus I assume it is probably a criticism of liberals, but I can’t figure it out.)

Sam, I don’t think it’s a criticism of anybody. Nor do I think there is a specific “it” in the list. Think Monica Lewinsky, or Iran-Contra.

It’s simply a humerous commentary on how our national publicity machine interacts with our citizenry.

Stage 7: (Recovery) Team up with Newt Gingrich for 2016 GOP presidential bid.
