Puerto Rican Statehood

One of the most interesting developments on Election Day was the vote in favor of statehood in Puerto Rico. While the actual statehood petition has to come from the Territorial Legislature, this is the first time that a majority on the island has voted to become the 51st state. Congress would then decide whether to admit Puerto Rico.
Presumably, this will go nowhere in the next Congress. Puerto Rico would almost certainly vote Democratic as a state, and a Republican House would probably not back something that will create two new Democratic Senators and at least one Democratic Representative. On the other hand, the GOP’s inability to appeal to Latino voters might lead them to think that they should support statehood sooner rather than later.
