Tension in Congress
posted by Gerard Magliocca
Representative Joe Wilson’s outburst during the President’s speech last night is getting a lot of attention. Of course, that sort of thing happens every day in the British House of Commons, but it is unusual in Congress. On the other hand, decorum today is much better than it was in the nineteenth century. In my research on the John Bingham biography, I’ve come across some correspondence and newspaper accounts stating that in the 1850s about 300 loaded weapons brought into the House chamber by spectators EVERY DAY. Talk about sending a message to your elected representatives.

Of course, they were gentler times: right wing radio had yet to be invented.
