Personal Reflections on Summer ’09
posted by Lawrence Cunningham
At a family gathering this weekend, I asked my young nieces and nephews what they had done this summer. At first, they all said they hadn’t done anything. When pressed, they recounted extraordinary achievements, playing baseball, riding horses, reading books, and traveling.
When I return to school in three weeks, my Dean may well ask me what I did this summer. At first, it may be easy to say nothing, or at least, nothing much more or less than I do every summer. Then, again, reflecting on the summer, I actually did quite a lot, professionally and personally, worth noting.
First, I posted 25 blog posts since Spring term ended in early May. Looking over them, they were heavy on the subject of financial regulation reform (about 8 posts, examples, here, here, here and here); two personal favorites addressed misleading use of language on important public topics (such as policy czars and taxpayer ownership); along with two book reviews (Posner and Kelly).
Second, I made progress on many projects, about which I also blogged. I completed my article on traditional versus economic analysis and Cardozo and Posner torts opinions (here and here), which I’ll submit to journals soon; began researching an article on corporate waste and contract law; finalized the supplement to my Corporations casebook; finalized the revised edition to my Corporations treatise; finalized the new edition of my Accounting textbook; and saw the release of a report from investors on financial regulation I assisted in preparing.
My Dean also cares about the personal side, where things were even better, reading, relaxing, running, grilling and doing crossword puzzles by the Ocean, and spending time with friends and family. Above all, as close friends know, I’ve had the most romantic summer of my lifetime. My nieces and nephews didn’t have to ask about that one; and they didn’t much care about the rest. Still, the work was worth doing, and my Dean will be happy all around. I hope your summer has been as joyous and productive as mine.
