Could Yahoo! + Bing = Death to Google?

Yahoo has decided it is a media company, not a search or technology company. For Yahoo, it’s all about pageviews. Outsourcing search frees up resources for what they now view as their core business.

Microsoft still has aspirations to compete in search, and they are throwing huge resources at that goal. They are thinking about it in diverse and deep ways, and have pulled in people like superstar Harvard economist Susan Athey to help them think through some of the issues.

There is a great need for a competitor to Google. Aside from the monopoly issues with regard to ad sales, Google’s organic results aren’t that good anymore. For any given search, you tend to get Wikipedia, plus link aggregator sites like superpages.com or content aggregrator sites like Highbeam.

    Ray,

You are correct. Yahoo! has given up being a tech company and is a media company. Whether it can pull that move off remains to be seen.

Great points about better search and competition. That is what I hope comes out of the Yahoo! Bing deal. Someone has to challenge Google. I will say that Google seems less complacent than Yahoo! was when it was taken with the the idea that the directory was its gem and would carry it. Still one might find that ten years from now Google will be be the old company and some new one will be the center of the tech universe for that moment.

  3. Microsoft Bing would be the closet competitor of Google. but i still use Google because it shows more relevant results on the serp.

As advertisers we like adcenter for the great conversion rates of Bing’s traffic.. With Yahoo though we are forced to buy clicks from junk partners that send nothing but fake clicks.. It’s a daily job to monitor all the new bad-domains to block.. And you have to PAY for all that.. :P

With the current merge of Yahoo and Bing let’s hope the new “team” will do it RIGHT by giving the advertisers the choice to pay only for real yahoo/bing searches.. just like Adwords and adcenter allow (for now?).

    Just my 2 cents

    Cheers!

i have been evaluating the search results of Microsoft Bing compared to Google and they are comparable. Bing gives almost the same relevant search results just like Google.

Most interesting. Are you sharing your results somewhere so folks can see them?

my default search engine is Yahoo but now i am using BING because it is much better than Yahoo. i heard that Bing search engine would power Yahoo search also.
