Dean Davis, who eventually became Governor of Vermont, was for much of his career a country lawyer. He tells the story of an incident he observed during Prohibition. The defendant was on trial for possession of a bottle of whiskey. When the prosecutor introduced the nearly empty bottle into evidence, the defendant asked to see it. Before anyone realized his intention, he opened the bottle and swallowed the remainder of the contents. The case had to be dismissed as the prosecution had no other evidence as to the contents of the bottle.
