Very scholarly, Frank, but at the same time understandable for those of us who aren't economists. I've had these same thoughts, and you clarified them for me. This blog would be helpful to the public (those who still read) in newspapers, although I'm concerned that the majority is so polarized in thought that looking at another viewpoint is not possible. Your thinking remains clear, logical and compassionate; I'm privileged to be part of that.

Thanks for the plug for the Directed Reading series (and of course the above link as well). Although there was a brief hiatus in the series, it recently resumed with bibliographies for Freudian Psychology, Health (as it relates to ethics, law & justice), Marxism, Hinduism, and Classical Chinese Worldviews (a motley, to be sure). Forthcoming anon: Buddhism and the Semitic religious traditions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Thanks, Patrick! I have added that in as a link for those interested in utopian thought, and I look forward to looking at it myself. Your directed reading series is a great contribution to the blogosphere.

Forgive me if I focus on the parenthetical comment about "the currently less fashionable kind of political dream known as utopia," as I blogged on precisely that not too long ago at Ratio Juris and plan a follow up post in the new year on the subject. Please see: http://ratiojuris.blogspot.com/2008/07/utopian-thought-imagination-part-1.html

Anyway, Frank, please tell us that you have a bevy of graduates students doing research for you, or at least helping you with all these links!
