Excellent post. I work in a retail environment, one that is allegedly recession-proof: a state run liquor store. Although I've notice shifts in buying trends as far back as August, it's really been only in the last month and a half that I've seen major shifts. My sales are up 10% over the prior year, but what I'm selling is a lot more smaller bottles and a lot more cheaper liquor.

I've also noted over the last month that a number of customers are coming in and talking to me about being laid off or of being one of the "lucky ones, so far". The fear out there is building and palpable. While not quite a bartender, customers will often discuss things with myself or my clerks rather openly.

It this trend continues, then we haven't seen the worst of this yet - not by a long shot. The food bank across the street is bursting at the seams already and the stories of other food banks struggling to meet needs is further evidence. Noonan bases her piece on observations of a rather protected and ignorant position of privilege. Come 6 months from now, after a cold winter, she may no longer be able to hide behind her privilege.

(Then again, what does one expect from Noonan? She thinks the 80s were just grand for everyone).
