Substitute "law school" for "media," and you've nailed the way Deans -- nay, the majority of legal educators today -- chase US News rankings, to the detriment of legal education. I think it's a problem in our culture -- a desire to validate oneself and one's institution through outward, quantifiable measures rather than actually doing a high-quality job that is less easy to measure and publicize.
