Bloomberg seems to have forgotten that his predecessor, Guiliani, tried the same thing with a similar fear-based rationale. The mayoral election in 2001 was to be held on September 11. After the attacks, Guiliani suggested that he stick around past the end of his term to help ease the city through its transition both beyond the attack and beyond his administration. That effort was met with much skeptical resistance, despite Guiliani’s high approval rating following the attacks, and ultimately, he left right on schedule. I don’t think this attitude of “you need me, so I’m not going” sits very well with New Yorkers. If 9/11 didn’t scare them enough, I don’t think the financial crisis will either.
