		<description>My dad is a retired dentist.  I remember years ago him telling me that Medicaid in New York paid $8 for a filling, compared to the market rate or $65.  As a result, the only dentists who took Medicaid were ones who engaged in fraud, because it was impossible to make a living otherwise (my dad didn&#039;t take it).

He also told me that when he first started practice in the early 60s, the norm was for dentists to do free or reduced-price work one afternoon a week, but that the advent of government programs killed the norm.
