It was never offically or unofficially reserved for whites students. The Jena Times report that that the black student who asked permission to sit beneath the tree posed the question in jest and that the auditorium erupted in laughter. Following the Jena High School beating incidence, the Justice Department reopened its investigation into the noose-hanging incident and found no link to the assault on Justin Barker or other confrontations between black and white students.
