I’ve decided to experiment with an auto-response to email that says, effectively: thanks for emailing me but I’m a bit overwhelmed. If I don’t get back to you with an answer promptly, feel free to send me another email in a couple days.

I’m not sure I’ll keep this on but it feels like a polite way of preemptively apologizing for longer delays in writing emails. I’m doubtful it will work…
