What "happy cultures"?

When I lived in Africa, everyone was happy... Rwanda anyone?

And here in the Philippines, everyone is happy...tell that to the politicians killed last week.

My theory is that religions that encourage cooperation and helping others and to put one's own needs behind others leads to...satisfaction.

Happiness means doing your own thing, which can lead to misery.

I remember reading about a pyschological study that found that the simple act of smiling could improve your mood all by itself.

Miriam and Patrick, it's comments like those that keep me blogging! Thanks so much.

Perhaps I'll do a bit more on potential economic analysis of friendly facial expressions (e.g., is it possible to smile so often one's smiles aren't taken seriously any more). Surprisingly enough, the issue actually comes up in the context of critiques of happiness research.

"Perhaps a certain seigniorage of cheer..."

If you've convinced Patrick that you've read everything, you've got me convinced that you a) have a wonderful vocabulary and b) sure know how to turn a phrase.

Incidentally (and no hijacking intentions here; well, then again...), Likpski's book, KOR: Workers' Defense Committee in Poland, 1976-1981 (Berkeley, CA: Univ. of California Press, 1985) is a perfect read for May Day. Or it's not too late to post something by Eric Hobsbawm, say, his discussion of May Day celebrations in Workers: Worlds of Labor (New York: Pantheon, 1985), specifically, chapter 5, 'The Transformation of Labor Rituals,' pp. 66-82.

Sorry Frank, I've haven't come across anything yet in the law blogs about May Day and I thought you'd at least be sympathetic!

Now that you've cited Havel's essay I'm *almost* convinced you've read everything: a few quotes from Adam Michnik, Jan Josef Lipski or Jacek Kuron should cinch it!

That is quite possibly the craziest idea I've ever heard of. It reminds me of the broken windows theory for preventing crime, and used in conjunction, I bet it might actually work.
