I’ve gotten quite a few of those nearstalanches, but all it takes for the real thing is to volunteer to host one of the carnivals. I did the Carnival of Recipes, and even with a complex theme and difficulty sending the notifications it took less than four hours. Lots of visits from people who’d never stopped by before.

And then there is the “degrees of separation” where an Instalanche is concerned. I’ve never had an Instalanche, but I’ve been in Grand Rounds and THEY got the Instalanche so that’s one degree of separation, etc. How many gift baskets do I have to SEND to Glenn before I get an Instalanche…????

For those of us with AdSense on our site, we also regularly check how many pennies we earned in the last X hours.

One thing that has removed some of the repetitiveness for narcissists: you can set up RSS feeds to automatically catch references to your blog on Technorati, BlogPulse, etc. Plus, I subscribe to my own RSS feed. So a lot of these checks can be done from a single interface (my Bloglines account).
